How Music Is Killing Your Chances With Women

I love music. A lot of times, I'll need to listen to music just to get motivated to do stuff like work, or go for a run, or even before I go out with friends.

Music is an important part of my life, as I'm sure it's an important part of yours.

I'm actually a big fan of jazz, but I also like a lot of rap, and rock. And I've realized something over the years.

The lyrics in these genres of music usually give the WORST advice when it comes to women.

If it's not some indie-rock dude whining about a girl who broke his heart and made him depressed, it's some rapper talking about how he gets girls by buying them stuff and showing off his jewelry.

Now when I hear this stuff, I laugh. I mean, I get into the music, and I'll even sing along sometimes.

But the mindset behind these kinds of lyrics is not just ignorant - it's EMBARRASSING to hear another man talk this way!

You see, when I was younger, I really had nothing to go on but the lyrics I heard in songs.

Crap like:

"I just wanna tell you how I feel, giiiirllll, ooooh"

Or

"You broke my heart and now my life is over, whaaah"

Or

"I'm so rich, I buy champagne, and impress that bitch" (I know, I can't rap, but you get the idea)

My idea of how to talk to women was either to be "smooth," whatever that means (usually guys think it means lowering your eyelids and licking your lips)...

Or be sensitive and tell a girl how crazy I was about her...

Or try to impress her with how much money I (didn't) have!

And I see guys doing the same thing...in 2008! It's obviously still a mystery to most guys WHAT WOMEN REALLY WANT.

These mindsets are the worst things you can possibly do! You'd probably have better luck not doing anything at all. And I'm sure you know what I mean - working your butt off just to get a woman to know you're alive.

Only for her to give you a polite smile and turn away to talk to some other, more confident guy.

And guess what - he's gonna try half as hard (if at all), and she's gonna end up sleeping with him, NOT YOU!

And it's all because you were seeking approval, and made it apparent with your persona.

You have to retrain your brain to think in a way that is conducive to escalation.

The thing is, it's not "hard." What REALLY WORKS is NEVER hard.

The question seems laughable at this point.

"What do I say to girls?"

As if there was a magical set of words, or a pattern of speech, that could make a woman like you.

And yet, that's the underlying belief isn't it?

Think about how you approach conversation with women. You are looking for the right words to say.

But look closer...what's missing?

The "right words to say"...to get WHAT?

Let's finish the sentence:

"I am looking for the right thing to say to get ____________"

S - E - X!

It all comes down to intercourse.

Now this may sound obvious, but only because you've verbalized it to yourself.

There are so many problems with this mindset, it's tough to know where to begin, even as a professional trainer.

It's like asking a history teacher, "Tell me about history - start at the beginning."

Most guys have it all wrong. They make their lives more difficult than it has to be!

I should know. If I didn't get a few lucky breaks early on, I'd still be hopeless.

But one thing's for sure - I've always been motivated enough to seek out information from everywhere I could.

I've gotten my hands on virtually every psychology book ever written. I'm serious.

And you know what? They've all helped.

But if I only knew where to begin way back when I first started. I would've saved so much time.

I can't even imagine how tough it'd be for a guy with even less experience than me. I mean there were times when I thought "I'll never get there."

That's part of why I do what I do.

Because like I said, most guys get it wrong. WAY WRONG.

If they only knew what it REALLY takes to be good at talking to women.

Women aren't really listening to WHAT you're talking about. They are paying close attention to HOW you say it.

The sad part is, when most of us guys were young, we'd talk about what we were interested in, but we'd be NERVOUS.

And this made girls reject us.

But we assumed it was WHAT we were saying, not HOW.

This is the problem most guys have - they have misinterpreted the responses they get from women.

For example, I know a guy who basically talks about all the women he's slept with TO OTHER WOMEN.

He doesn't do it in a bragging way, but as if he were shooting the sh*t with the guys.

That's not ALL he talks about, but the effect is that women feel he is honest, sexual, and being himself.

Not to mention the fact that they start imagining what it'd be like to be with him!

But as he's saying this, he is totally confident, and enjoying the story.

Listen - there's really no reason why you shouldn't be getting the women, and sexual adventures you deserve.

But you MUST have your conversation-game in order.

This starts with knowing where to place your focus.

If your flirting period wasn't too long or maybe lasted only a few hours or minutes, you are more liable to commit mistakes in your first date by either taking her to a place that she hates or saying something to her that she might not like.

Come what may, always find out what type she is - introvert or outgoing, nature lover or a party animal. Your first date arrangements would be more fruitful if you know that.

Are you missing the signals women are giving you?

I'm sure you've seen these commercials aimed at men. They're usually pitching some product that has absolutely nothing with dating or women.

For example, deodorant, gum, a car, even FOOD. There's some doofus with a movie star haircut and chiseled jaw standing there with his super-stuffed burrito in hand, with two model-looking women looking at him like he just gave them 10 orgasms a piece.

The message is, "Eat this burrito and girls will love you."

Or those gum commercials, where the guy pops a stick of gum in his mouth, and all of a sudden, some super-model looks over at him like he's her favorite flavor popsicle.

"Chew gum, chicks dig it."

I find this both funny and sad.

Funny because of how ridiculous the message is.

Sad because this crap actually gets into guys' brains after repeated exposure. The TV is a brainwashing machine.

But these ads bring up a really important topic.

What kind of signals do women really send us guys?

In the past, I would assume that if a girl didn't twirl her hair, twinkle her eyes, and smile shyly, that she wasn't into me.

I literally thought that women sent signals like this to guys if they were attracted to him.

Now I know exactly what to look for. I see the matrix, and let me tell you, there are signals EVERYWHERE.

Not a day goes by that I notice a signal to approach from a woman. Women are constantly inviting me to talk to them, or at least letting me know that they are attracted.

But here's the thing - most of the time they aren't aware of what they are doing.

Women's signals are very much like "poker tells."

I remember shoplifting when I was a teenager. I didn't do it often - only a couple times, but I vividly recall how nervous I was.

I was in the mall, at a clothing store, about to carry out a plan to steal a sweater.

A friend of mine had told me how to do it. You take a pile of shirts into the dressing room, and put one of them on under your shirt. Then just walk out like nothing happened (this was before the time of alarms and cameras).

As I entered the store, I got very nervous. I wandered around, trying my best to "look normal," and wandered probably every aisle looking over all the stuff as if I planned to buy something.

I was extremely self-conscious and paranoid, thinking that all the sales people were watching me.

And I was stalling - I kept procrastinating until the "perfect moment."

After circling the store twice, I finally got some shirts and went into dressing room. I put the sweater on, put my shirt over it, and stood there, terrified of what came next.

Finally I walked out, and, trying not to sprint, walked briskly towards the entrance.

And then I was outside. Whew!

The funny thing is, the emotions I felt throughout this ordeal were the same emotions I felt when I approached women when I was younger.

I'd feel nervous, guilty, and paranoid that everyone was watching me. And if I actually could pull myself together enough to say something, I'd quickly eject and escape to safety.

Now here's the thing. After many years of experience, I finally realized something.

I'm a failure for psychology articles. I actually think most psychology theories are useless and misleading.

There's a term for this - "junk psychology" or "pop psychology."

But there's something to learn in everything you encounter.

I recently read an article that looked at how generous guys are when in a romantic state of mind. Basically, it went like this:

Random people were approached on the street and asked to think of a) a favorite piece of music, or b) a romantic encounter they had or would like to have.

Then, as they walked on, someone else approached the person and asked for money for a train ticket.

The males who were told to adopt a romantic focus became much more generous than those who were told to think about music.

For women, generosity was initially high (in the control group) and stayed about the same regardless of the independent variable (what to think about).

I'm sure you can relate to this. If you leave your house after having a "hook-up", you are in a great mood and will most likely give some change to a bum if you have it.

If you are on a date with a woman and you like her, you will most likely start shelling out money just to keep her happy.

But I have to say, thinking about this pissed me off.

Men are workers, earners. We like to use our minds and bodies to support ourselves and bring home the bacon. It just feels good as a man!

Why not bake him a personalized, delicious sweet? They're inexpensive, tasty and you can make him a variety of different kinds each time. So what are some of the best ones that are easy to make and won't break or melt during delivery? Cookies of all different kinds, small cakes and cupcakes or pies all would be great choices and would be a big hit for him, but I will focus on just cookies this time

Cookies are easy to deliver, create multiple treats that will last for several snack times and are easy to make into different varieties. Learn a favorite recipe by heart and you'll make it much faster after that. No-bake cookies are the easiest to make since all you're doing is the prep work. You could mix them with all different types of toppings too from mini milk chocolate chips to white-chocolate, M&Ms, sprinkles to colored sugar and more. Of course you could make the traditional chocolate chip cookies, peanut butter or chewy oatmeal raisin. However, the most fun to make, easiest to personalize and ones I believe make the best gifts are cut-out sugar cookies.

What are some of your boyfriend's favorite things to do? Does he love to play sports, or maybe watches them, maybe he loves motorcycles, boats, computers? Is he a musician, does he like magic, cars? You could make him cookies in shapes of his favorite things or even in the shape of your name. Make him the helmet of his favorite football team, or cookies in the shape of a basketball, the name of his favorite band in the correct font. If you'd like to be romantic you could make heart-shaped cookies or in shapes of kisses. You first need to get a recipe for cut-out sugar cookies and for the icing (or frosting). Then get the supplies that you're missing from your kitchen. You don't need to get all the fancy equipment just the basics, but do store and organize them so they'll be easy to access later.

The basic supplies you'll need to make the recipe will be some mixing bowls and wooden spoons (they're the strongest), measuring cups and spoons, wax paper, rolling pin, metal spatula, cookie sheets, white paper and big index cards. If you already have an electric mixer it'll make mixing the dough much easier, but it isn't necessary. Many of these supplies you can get at Wal-Mart, dollar stores or craft stores at inexpensive prices. The easiest way I've found to customize the cookie cutters or in this case cut-out cardboard shapes is to look for cookie cutter images on Google then make simple drawings on the paper, cut out the shape then trace it onto the sturdier index card that you will place on the dough and then cut around. Use shapes that don't have too many narrow appendages or points since they can break easier during delivery. So for example let's say his favorite animal was a dolphin. Rather than look up images of dolphins it's easier to look up "dolphin cookie cutters" images. Then just slowly draw the image or you could even make an outline with dots then connect them.

Once the dough is complete roll it out at least ¼ inch thick so they'll end up being stronger for delivery. Use your homemade cookie shapes and follow the baking instructions on the recipe.

The fun isn't over yet. Now you'll get to decorate them. The basic supplies you'll need for post-baking besides the recipe for the icing will be many small bowls for the different colors of icing, food coloring package, small paint brushes (just for baking!), pastry brush (preferably a couple or you'll have to clean them each time you switch colors), toothpicks, an airtight container for storage in fridge before delivery, more wax paper and a decorative cookie tin to put the finished product in. You could use confectioner's sugar frosting that comes packaged in a plastic container, but icing will stick better to the cookies. Determine what colors you will be using for the icing and place the colors in the various bowls. You could use basic techniques for the first few batches then get more advanced. There are some great books you could get from the library to improve your cookie decorating techniques. Take pictures of each better and watch your improvement. The simple stuff is more than effective and the recipes will guide you through them. The box from the food coloring will tell you how to achieve the exact colors.

Place the cookies in a small decorative metal box and cover them in wax paper. Cushion the bottom of tin and top with packing bubbles or crumbled wax paper. Take them to the post office and delivery them with the USPS's priority flat rate service. It's less expensive than airmail and only takes 2-3 days to arrive. If you're from another country research the most economic and fastest way form of delivery.

When your boyfriend sees the personalized cookies he will have the biggest smile on his face. Your work will pay off and he'll be thinking about you with each bite! The problem with a woman flaking out on you is that you seldom get an explanation.

If only you knew what you did WRONG, you could FIX IT. But women aren't very helpful in this arena, as I've learned the hard way.

That's why I had to learn for myself. I asked questions, got every piece of material I could buy.

And of course there's trial and error. Which is no fun until you start having success, let me tell you.

Finding the right path is tough. Which book, dvd, teacher, piece of advice?

Why did this work, why did that work?

If you don't find a solid path to guide you, you'll just end up spinning your wheels.

I'm sure you know what I mean. There's nothing more frustrating than WANTING attractive women in your life, but hitting dead-end after dead-end.

A while ago I coined the term "flake." I can't take full credit for this term, but I was using it specifically in the context of women giving you their number, and then being difficult when it came to actually going out.

This is nothing new to guys - we all know how flaky women can be. And they have all sorts of reasons why.

And guess what - most of those reasons have NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU!

But as a guy, your ego is fragile, and you take her flakiness personally.

But I've got another term for you (this one's a little more technical).

"Reassuring persistence."

It's his personal "formula" for dealing with flaky women.

Let me break down this term:

Instead of assuming the women doesn't like you, you must assume she DOES like you, and is just hesitating for some reason unrelated to you.

So you respond by reassuring her - adopting a relaxed, pressure-free attitude, and letting her know that "it's ok, we'll have fun. When you're ready, I'll make sure you have a great time with me."

At the same time, you must balance this with PERSISTENCE. But persistence doesn't equal "stalker."

If you're really interested in a woman, you should be persistent. This is YOUR LIFE.

When you can be warm and emotionally unaffected, while staying on her mind, you will have ZERO FLAKING.

There's nothing more frustrating than spending an hour spitting game to a girl at the bar, only to call her the next day and not get an answer.

In the era of cell-phones, it's understandable if you don't get an answer the first time you call. But there you are, waiting for her to call you back.

And it never happens.

Or let's say you text her. And she doesn't text back.

That's actually worse! She OBVIOUSLY has text messaging, and SEES YOUR TEXT.

And she chooses to not respond. After ALL THAT WORK!

To make matters worse, you were probably NERVOUS about calling, and had to overcome a tough case of the 'butterflies' to work up the nerve to call her.

I remember back in high school, when I'd occasionally stumble onto a phone number. Girls would have parties or whatever, and give me their number.

"Call me!" They'd say in a chipper voice.

Yeah...as if it were that easy.

Us guys have it tough sometimes. We have to do all the work!

Or do we?

This was a question I never bothered to answer until I was in my 20's...after a lot of failure.

But thank god I did at all!

You can't get mad about all that lost time, all those unanswered phone calls, and failed attempts.

After all, if it weren't for your frustration, you wouldn't be so motivated to seek out new knowledge, and learn all you can about women.

I know that when I first got started, I was a SPONGE.

I couldn't get enough...of psychology studies, experience, advice from women, and from guys who were good with women.

There's really no other way. I think it was Isaac Newton who said something along the lines of "if I can see farther, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants."

No one can do it alone. But it can certainly feel lonely on your quest.

That's because, ultimately, no one can change your life except for you.

And being better with women is just one aspect of this. In fact, by improving your life in other ways, you can actually get better with women naturally.

I have a friend named Matt.

He was one of the fastest learners in the Masterminds.

But I wouldn't say he's any smarter than the next man. He was just totally committed, and knew how to WORK SMARTER.

OK, maybe he is smarter.

I've spoken to him about his incredible rate of progress, and it turns out, he actually has a system to increase the learning curve by up to TEN TIMES.

I wish I knew this stuff when I was younger. I could've avoided all the dead-ends of dating.

It was USELESS calling a girl, and calling her again...and again. And getting no answer.

Because not only do you not make progress, YOU DON'T LEARN ANYTHING.

Me and my good friend Julian, who is one of the best pickup artists I've ever met. This is a guy I'd have on my team for sure if he weren't doing his own thing.

He and I came together to put a COMPLETE SYSTEM to not only eliminate flaking, but to learn from your mistakes during your initial learning-phase.

I remember one of the most profound moments I had a survey, asking women:

Why Do Women Avoid You?

There are really two ways to pre-empt any potential flake outs.

(Flake-outs, or "flaking," if you're new to my stuff, means that you got a woman's phone number, but she's either not calling you back, or being difficult about going on a date with you.)

The first way to minimize the chances of a woman flaking on you is by having a GREAT first interaction. If there's chemistry, odds are, she will be very motivated to answer the phone, or call/text you back.

The second way is even more powerful. If you can sleep with a woman the first time you meet her, you can guarantee she'll never flake on you.

But to do this consistently is the reality of a master pickup artist.

If you aren't there yet, you're gonna have to rely on some anti-flaking maneuvers.

The first thing to understand is the female mind.

Ok, it's not THAT simple. In fact, you'll probably NEVER totally understand how women think.

That's because each woman is different. And this is the first key when dealing with flakes.

She probably has her own reasons for not calling you back, and the odds are, they have nothing to do with you.

I know how frustrating it can be when you do all that work and push through all those emotional walls, only to hit a dead end with NO EXPLANATION as to WHAT WENT WRONG!

Think about it - you see her. You know you have to meet her. But you're also terrified.

So you work up the nerve to approach, as if this were the frontlines of battle.

And you push through the initial awkwardness of the conversation with this stranger.

And you work up the courage to ask for a number.

And then later that night you sit there, with your phone in your hand.

Her number is on the display.

And you sit...and think about what you're going to say. And you sit some more.

"Ok, I'm gonna do it. Just be cool. Just be yourself."

And you call...it's ringing...and ringing....and....voicemail.

"Uh hey it's Vin, from uh, from the - from today. It was nice meeting you, so um just call me whenever ok? Um my number is xxx-xxxx. Ok just call me ok? Bye."

(I just vomited in my mouth)

God this brings back so many painful memories. Listen - let's put an end to this.

The thing that can be hardest to overcome is bad memories of failed phone calls.

I remember calling girls in high school, and let's just say, it usually resulted in them avoiding me the next day.

Forced conversation is probably the worst thing you can do, aside from getting ignored altogether.

It all comes down to trying to say the right thing. My trainer, Brian, has a great bit of feedback for guys struggling with this.

He says, "allow yourself to be boring, stupid, lame, un-funny, and offensive. Because if you have to walk on eggshells around her, why would you want to date her?"

Awesome.

My main guy in the Western Hemisphere, Matt, has a similar approach.

This is a guy who accelerated so fast after first getting trained. He advocates COMPLETELY SPONTANEOUS NATURAL GAME.

In fact, he refuses to premeditate anything.

I've seen him do some pretty silly stuff, and pull it off with the HOTTEST WOMEN (like the Victoria Secret model in NYC last summer).

It's interesting to contrast these two guys.

Matt is very friendly and silly.

Brian is more quiet and rough around the edges.

Matt goes for thin, tall, glamorous model types.

Brian goes for curvy, ethnic women, who are more "ghetto" than "glamour."

But they get the same results.

If they're not pulling THAT NIGHT, the number is solid.

And even if it isn't, they MAKE IT SOLID because their ant-flaking game is so tight.

In a relationship, there exists some "stages." Like being introduced, getting to casually know each other, dating each other, and then going to a more serious level. And second, you would not want to outstay his welcome, and neither would he want to impose himself on you. At some point in a chat conversation, the other person on the line may need or want to do something else. So at the risk of sounding rude, they talk about inane things, but at the back of their mind, they're thinking, "Oh when will this person ever stop?" Again, this is a mood and attraction killer that you seriously want to avoid.

Another thing, don't be available every single minute of every single day because that would make him think that you're waiting for him. Set your mode to invisible if it's totally necessary to be online. Or, you can create a separate account for your millionaire dating IM, which you can afford to be offline with for a time in the day. In this way, he would be more intrigued and interested, prompting him to ask for your phone number and meeting face-to-face. See?

The Age of Communication

It's ironic to me that we call the modern era the Age of Communication. Why is that you ask? One obvious example. A lack of communication is listed as the leading cause of breakdowns in marriages and relationships. Kind of ironic to call the current age the age of communication when our current era has a higher divorce rate than has ever been before? I came across an interesting quote awhile back that I think explains this phenomena very well. "The more the words, the less the meaning, and how does that profit anyone?" That quote is more than 3000 years old, but I think it sums up our current age of communication perfectly.

It struck me, because it reminded me a great deal of our modern era. Though in our modern era, communication abounds, with text messaging, emails, and constant updates on facebook and twitter, meaningful communication seems to be dwindling rapidly. The Age of Communication is almost like a great roar drowning out the honest, rare whispers of wise counsel that often are lost in the fray of everything else going on. Our Age of Communication seems like a sham to me — an age which knows fewer words, yet preaches them all the louder in order to make up for it, an age that has nothing new to contribute, but speaks the same dribble all the louder just to make up for it. I don't know, maybe I'm being too hard on us.

If I could liken it to something for a moment, the Age of Communication seems similar to another modern phenomenon: ambient light. There's a hilltop by my home that I often visit at night and watch the distant city beyond. There it sits, enshrouded in a glow of low-level brightness pervading all the night world. Though the ambient light is good for those traveling through the city, those wishing to gaze upward at the stars beyond are hindered and unable to take in the manifold array of tiny lights.

Our Age of Communication seems the same. Though we as humans communicate more now than ever before, we haven't learned how to communicate meaningfully, and our words are drowned in a hum of mediocrity. And because of our constant communications with those around us, we never perceive what a treasure real communication is, living a life blind to the vast array of twinkling thoughts that lies just overhead.

It is estimated that one in thirteen people in the UK are dependent upon alcohol. Nearly everyone knows of someone who has, to some extent, battled with this particular addiction, one that drives those affected to drink large amounts of alcohol, and to experience withdrawal symptoms if they do not take it regularly. It is also well known that over time the excessive consumption of alcohol can have a detrimental affect on a persons health. Short-term affects include anxiety, memory loss and nausea, while long-term alcohol abuse can increase the risk of a person contracting cancer, liver disease and pancreatitis as well as potentially developing some form of mental illness, such as depression or memory loss.

The good thing is that recovering from alcohol addiction is possible, but first and foremost is that of admission; that a person recognises that they have a problem with alcohol. Only once a person admits that they have a problem can they begin on the road to recovery.

Alcohol Dependency

In moderation, alcohol can, for some, enhance the quality of life. Often consumed with friends and family in social situations, where we celebrate, commiserate and relax. However, for many people the regular consumption of alcohol turns into a habit, the real problem being caused when they have to drink more and more to have the desired effect (e.g. complete relaxation and forgetting about the 'real world'). A person who is alcohol dependent will display the following:

- A strong compulsion to drink; - Continued extreme use of alcohol despite being aware of its damaging affects; - Withdrawal symptoms when decreasing or stopping alcohol consumption; - A pre-occupation with acquiring and consuming alcohol.

How to tell if you are addicted

For men, Christian Carter says, this feels like needy behavior and many times they will agree with you just to make you stop. Not good. Mind you – Christian Carter is not saying it IS necessarily needy behavior, but he is saying it is how it is usually viewed by men.

As a woman, then, what should we DO about this validation problem?

The very simple answer to that is STOP. SCREW VALIDATION. You feel what you feel, and you are entitled to feel what you feel. You don’t have to have permission from your man to feel the way you do, and in truth, he does not have to understand it. So give YOURSELF permission to experience your own emotions and to have your own feelings. THEN, give everyone else permission not to agree with them. It does not matter if they agree or not. The feelings are YOURS. Any girl worth her glass slippers knows that no man can resist big shinny salty tears falling from her eyes. Most men will do anything to prevent or stop a girl from crying. The study of this phenomenon has not yielded any conclusive results as to why exactly this is, but it is a well know fact. So it goes without saying that girls have the crying act waiting in the wings as plan B at all times. This is not to say that every time a girl cries, she is faking it, but it is a safe bet that she knows that it can’t hurt.

Since crying to get what you want has proven to be so successful, it has secured a permanent spot in some women’s bag of tricks; only now it shares that bag with something else. A lot of women have emerged, from decades past, determined to be seen and heard as equal to their male counterparts. This new attitude makes crying a little out of the question, but there is still something just for them. The tougher girls of today will be more likely to fight for what they want before they cry; or they will have a girl tantrum.

Girl tantrums are not all created equal, but they stick to the same basic principles. The jury is still out on how they rate in effectiveness when compared to the softer more feminine shedding of tears. But the preliminary results are not looking too good.

She may not be holding her breath or physically throwing herself on the ground to get what she wants, but what she is doing is having the same effect on the person it is intended towards.

Whether it works or not is completely dependent on how the person, she is using it on, feels about her. It can also depend on the other person’s desire to please, or how uncomfortable they are with conflict. In a romantic relationship, the tantrum will fail if the guy isn’t totally into making her happy, and willing to do anything to achieve that.

Any form of emotional blackmail or trickery is ultimately unhealthy to a relationship in the long run. These things only work for so long, and the need for them in the first place says a lot about the relationship, and what it is saying is not good.

There are times when we all just need to be right, or to get our way. If we are in a healthy relationship, we will, without having to resort to games. But every once in a while, a good cry is in order.

Many people are so busy scrambling to be politically correct on every major topic you can imagine, that even they forget what they really think. They lose track of who they were and what they believed in. They get to place where even their feelings about things seem out of place and foreign.

Losing yourself in this way steals the pleasure from your life and takes away from all the things that you could have offered yourself, your family, and the world. But that’s not all it does. Losing track of your feelings goes hand in hand with losing the ability to judge things by what your instincts tell you, and ultimately, you can forget how to trust them.

One of the first things that we are told when we are getting ready to meet new people is not to judge them by the way they look. It seems that it is fast becoming popular to stop believing what you see, but rather believe in what you are told. Actually, judging anything at all is fast going out of style.

This is just another example of how a lack of balance and order within people’s behaviors can lead them astray. Unfortunately, they will not realize they were even lost until they have gone a long way out of their way; so long that some will find it much simpler to continue on the path that everybody else is on.

Judging other people for the sole purpose of hurting them, or diminishing their lives, is not enlightening or satisfying in any way. But observing the way a person lives and conducts themselves, and then using that information to determine if we want them to be a part of our life puts our instincts to the best use possible.

We cannot let fear of being rejected or isolated continue to dictate our every thought and action. It is simply impossible to please all people all the time, so we may as well live as true to ourselves as we can.

When you meet a person who has no interest in taking care of themselves, you should not look past it. Realize that their lack of effort to be clean and inviting is their direct statement to other people. They are asking for their appearance to speak for them. Either they are mentally ill, or they simply don’t care. Even someone’s mental status will be information that we will need to know when dealing with them. But if a person just does not care about themselves, you can bet they will not care about you.

We all have faults and flaws, but how we live with those flaws shows our strengths. To ignore the flaws would be to ignore the strengths. Nobody ever really knows another person completely. But there are very telling clues that are written all over everything people do and say, that leads to a better understanding of them. We should absolutely take into consideration every aspect of a person before deciding if they are who they portray themselves to be, and the best place to start is their cover.

Do you know, as a single guy I have been asked many times recently by girls if I can explain basic male behavior in terms that we can all understand. Laborious chats over much wine have led to my lady friends confessing that all is not well in the world of reading what men are thinking. So the Singles Files decided to take a look. It appears that even in our advanced culture, the sexes still present the simplest misunderstandings. Men constantly appear to be a mystery when dating, and even as a man, I agree that we can be as frustrating and perplexing to the uninitiated. So it's back to basics for us today.

Millions of years of evolution haven't clouded human nature and even the most skillful women dater will have encountered male antics that defy belief. 'He acts like a Neanderthal' she may say. And do you, know, she isn't far wrong. Why? Simple, man is a hunter; that is what he was designed to do: Hunt. Which essentially means that in the world of dating the man wants to hunt you, even if you are the easiest catch on earth. Women forget this fact and ignore it at their peril. To get the man you want, you have to make them chase you and feel like they have achieved something when they eventually get to put their arm round your waist and give you a perfect kiss. If that sense of achievement is missing, your hunter will go on searching.

Okay so let's move on to the Savannah plain to explain further. How do we know what men want and like. Well all hunters want to catch the lioness, she with the thick mane and feline grace, queen of the jungle. Men will convince themselves that they could catch the lioness if they so wanted because they all like to think they are king of the jungle. But today they are too tired to do anything about it. That is exactly what happens when your hunters gather in bars together. They discuss the ones that got away and their prowess out in the field. The gazelle you see can be found in packs out any weekend night with their Gazelle friends. Gazelles live next door, or across the street. They are beautiful creatures and fairly obtainable: But not without a fight. So the chase is on. Which of our hunters will success in capturing his gazelle this weekend? The more they hunt and chase; and the longer they are made to chase, the more rewarded they will feel when they finally succeed. And inevitably our hunter will settle down and give up hunting. But only if his Gazelle makes him feel like he has succeeded and is a true catch. Now our hunter believes he caught his Gazelle all by himself, but maybe just maybe, the Gazelle let herself be caught. Eventually.

On the down side of our make believe Savannah is the antelope. Now our hunter wants the lioness and he tries to convince himself he could capture her if he really wanted but it is too much like hard work. He really knows that he will capture his Gazelle in all reality, but when Gazelles are scarce and hard to come by, he will go for the easy target, the antelope. Down in the bar on a Friday evening there are few Gazelles about but the antelope is grazing nearby so he pounces and achieves a result straight away. There is no chase, no thrill and hardly any sense of achievement, but it staves off his hunger for now. Tomorrow the hunt will begin again.

The antelope doesn't fair too well out of this scenario but she was never going to put up too much of a chase and he was never going to be satisfied with the outcome. So at the next opportunity your hunter will be off seeking the gazelles once again, with a sly look in the direction of the lioness in a wishful thinking kind of way. And what if the hunter does finally get his gazelle, will he be satisfied? Invariably yes. The lioness is out of reach and far too scarce. The lioness may represent perfection in our hunters' Savannah plain and he may even think about what if every now and again. However if he did catch the lioness, she would probably eat him alive! But the man as hunter will be extremely happy with his sense of achievement. The antelope will always lose out because she cannot provide our hunters with what they need and desire most - chase, thrill and an implicit satisfaction with the end result.

Where it all goes badly wrong is when the lioness, gazelle and even antelope go hunting the hunter. The hunter doesn't know what to do and is not designed to cope in such situations. The hunter will be frightened and run away. So the important point to make is that allow the hunter to feel he is doing the chasing, even if secretly, he isn't. The hunter will still feel like he deserves the feeling of success and achievement even if you led him to you.

Our urban jungles are full all such creatures. Hunters are everywhere. The unbelievably attractive and desirable lioness with her Manolo Blahnicks? Our hunter lusts after her but will rarely obtain. The beautiful Gazelle next door who puts up an excellent enough chase that the hunter will eventually settle with. The dowdy antelope is simply too obtainable to present a challenge. Now do not feel demeaned by this because of course your hunter is still the Neanderthal but if you think of our world on this level it becomes easier to get inside a man's head. Remember that I blamed you. Well of course that's only partially true. But the fact is, if you don't keep your man standing on quicksand, he will lay down and go to sleep. As a man likes to chase, he likes to feel he has achieved greatness by achieving you as his girlfriend. Once he has done that he will proudly display his trophy and be content. He will set about creating his idea of perfect domestic bliss and being loved-up you will go along with it. What you may not realize is that you are putting up with a lot of crap along the way in the early stages. You may well know it , but unless you have kept him in check some ground rules may have been set. To become his mother is not the path to relationship heaven.

The question is, can you keep him on his toes. Can you keep him wanting you as if he was fighting for his life? Of course you can, you just need to do it that's all. He is going to call you at work and ask what time you are home. He is going to make assumptions that you are doing some things he likes this weekend. He will assume you love spending your weekend with his nieces and nephews. You are going to let him do that? Of course not. You are going to make him worry. Unnecessarily of course because you love him. But this is for his and your own good before it is too late.

The path to relationship heaven with a man is to make him work for you, to date you, to want you, as if you were the only woman to walk the earth. You do that by changing his expectations and goalposts continually after you have become a couple. To settle in to domestic routine is to allow him to move into a comfort zone you will later regret. At first you may feel you want that too. You both want to be domesticated and fall into a routine. But then you will panic.

Who does the washing, cleaning and ironing ? Was it decided that you were the best at it? When you first met him, his shirts were perfectly laundered and you didn't do them then. Who said you could cook better than him? Remember that perfect meal he made you on your third date? Where did those culinary skills go? Remember getting up at 6am to make you a surprise breakfast in bed, who said that had to stop? Little by little, you begin collecting his socks from the floor by the bed, you turn the TV off after he has fallen asleep on the sofa at 11pm. You pick him up from the bar after his regular night out with his buddies. And you blame him for getting comfortable? Okay , so it is time to do something about it.

You don't need to change your man if you start early enough, because he is there for the molding. Men are starting to be aware that women implant ideas in their heads and let the guy take the credit but they are not yet generally advanced enough to make an issue of this. So plant away all you like. He will accept. The fact is, you need to ensure your man is never ever allowed to lay down flat in the comfort zone. Every now and again you have to stir things up and be as equal in ground rules from the very start, as he. Ignore this at your peril.

How many times have you heard men say, I only realized how much I love you after I lost you? That is because their comfort zone was rudely removed and they woke up. So your task is to not allow them to go to sleep in the first place. We all want a quiet life with no head games. We don't need to play carefully constructed games as we get older? Ehm, I think you will find that you do. Nice games, but games that allow you to mature together before your relationship falls apart. You can be comfortable after 40 years of marriage in your dotage like your parents but to reach that point you better make sure that your man never takes you for granted. Not unless you want a life of unfulfillment.

Men will and do take their girls for granted because they are allowed to get away with it. By the same token, men love to chase their girls and feel huge pride in loving a real catch. To be the real catch you have to keep him fishing. And from time to time you need to get him to change the bait on his hook. Why would he look elsewhere at another women if he is constantly wanting and needing you? Let him take you for granted and watch what happens! So it is down to you to make that happen, to keep him chasing you. You could argue that you want a lazy life too and don't want to get the man you love to stand on quicksand. Fair enough, the problem is you will realize all too late that you are not happy with your later situation and by then, maybe it's too late.

Women often say that men confuse them and that they are unsure what a man is really looking for. Generations of history dictating a man's role and function cannot be decided and altered in the space of 20 years without some fallout. Few can argue against the excitement felt by women as their empowerment continues but at the same time, one must expect issues to coincide with this. And one of those as I said is the question of understanding what the modern man is looking for.

Men have started to evolve and are starting to grasp the fact that their role may not be as it once was. "Starting" is the operative word because this does not mean that there aren't large swathes of the world where men insist on being the breadwinner and women should still remain at home rearing children. It is going to take a long time to change the world. However in our western cities a change is in full swing. Men know that to find a mate they are going to have to work harder than ever before and they are aware that women call the shots far more than ever before. But this doesn't essentially change what a man is looking for.

Okay so what is a man seeking?

First of all a man is seeking a love-interest. This may surprise many women but men like to love and they like being loved in return. The problem is that many women come across as impassioned and cold. It is not easy to find a loving woman and it is very noticeable how many men try and hang on when they think they have found their Miss Right.

Men are seeking a woman who is attractive to them. Women may despair that men can be so shallow and that looks could matter so much but be careful. But reverse the situation and as a woman, you hate him doing the same. A man can never forgive a woman being unfaithful and so he is looking for someone who he really does trust.

Men want to make a home eventually and are looking for a woman who will be a willing sharer in home life. Women with a sociable lifestyle are attractive because they can be relied upon to keep the social diary running in a long term relationship.

Men are seeking women who are feminine gentle and kind because deep down the qualities that make a woman a great mother are an attraction in themselves. I am not suggesting that the man himself needs mothering, though some do, it is more the point that men seek the attributes in women that point to someone who would make a great mother to future offspring.

Men want women with a great sense of humor. Women often come across as uptight or too bothered by too many small details. You will sometimes hear mention of a girl who is 'one of the boys'. What this means is that she is able to fit in with their humor and is sociable and fun to be with. Such women are extremely attractive to many men. Men want to have a good time and relax when not working and so their ideal partners are women who are able to do the same.

Men are looking for women who retain their femininity and and are caring and kind. In recent years, aping men may be a female fashion statement, but it doesn't make them attractive. Whilst every woman in the world burps and farts and has the right to drink pints of beer, it doesn't necessarily attract them to the opposite sex. Women can get angry and say well men will just have to get used to it, but the issue is that they don't. They can just choose not to go for women who act in the same way as their drinking buddies.

Men can be manipulated yes, but they see their partnerships as support systems. The best relationships work both ways in terms of support. Men don't like angry women who shout. They want a woman who can debate and converse and is able to discuss. Communication is king. A fiery passionate temperament may have made you interesting and challenging on day one. But by day 500 it holds no glory whatsoever.

Men are generally more reserved about sex than women. This is my experience is a fact. Men know what they like in bed and tend to stick to it. The adventurous sexual appetite in most men isn't there even if they are convinced it is. Men in reality are quite conservative. Sexually adventurous has nothing to do with having lots of partners and more to do with the things they will try with the same partner. In most test cases I have conducted, it is the man who looks for a quiet time in the bedroom and the woman who ultimately becomes bored.

Men want a woman who will commit to them. Though increasingly this is hard to find, it doesn't take away the wish. Men want a girlfriend who they can share with and trust and be open with. Commitment is not a one way street and therefore men are struggling to find the levels of commitment they found previously. But the need is still there.

Men don't want to be alone.

This column can easily fire a great debate. The fact is, a modern man is seeking a reliable, sexy, single girl with whom he can have a long term relationship with. He wants to have fun, share his life and ultimately settle down. There are a few long term bachelors but not that many. The problem guys have is that the world has changed. They don't necessarily want to have children and settle down straight away, but it will come. They do seek self-respect even if they are not the primary breadwinner and they seek respect from their partner.

While women become increasingly strong in their new roles in society, it is worth remembering that it takes, and always will take, two to tango.

Does Mr. Right exist? Is he out there somewhere? Will I find him?

Mr. Right is a key subject for many women and an inspiration of hope on a daily basis. Yes, probably exists Yes, he is probably your match. Yes, you WILL find him! Of course in all our lives we have goals, aims, ambitions and desires small and large. It is these landmarks and goalposts that keep us positive and busy. It is what makes us human. In recent years the terms Mr. Right and Miss Right have become over used and clichéd. It is almost as if we have a chart on our wall, an extensive check list or a resume of specifics that the person in question must submit to get his foot through the door of the "potentials" interview.

Most of us would deny we are pushing away Mr. Right as we hope that chance will take a hand in bringing Mr. Right to us. Many of us accept that we have a small but insignificant "list" and yes, we accept that there are some requirements on it which are nonnegotiable, but they are fairly minor. Or are they? The fact of the matter is that as the decades have passed by, we have become far more sophisticated, as humans, as individuals, as lovers and mates. We are adults, we have a good salary and a nice home and are well educated in the ways of the world. Therefore it is only fair that we seek someone to match, to fit in, to adapt, to accompany, to facilitate, right? Therein lays the issue.

The fact is that Mr. Right also has a check list, of his wishes and needs, only a small one of course, but a list all the same, and he is ticking off your assets as we speak. He wants someone young, someone well educated, someone good looking and in shape. We are indignant, how shallow we cry. Typical man we sigh. Yet are we any better? Look at your list and look very carefully at what or who constitutes your Mr. Right. And then look again. Are you sure first of all that your tick list is achievable? Yes, or are you willing to negotiate? Okay so you are happy with your list. Then what?

Are you willing to go out and get your Mr. Right or are you waiting for him to come to you? Many women tell me they are waiting for Mr. Right. The word "waiting" concerns me. By waiting it means men come to you by chance, perhaps by design and you tick off their assets, your check them out and then cast off anyone who doesn't match your list. Maybe you do, but remember this my friends, Mr. Right is looking for his Miss Right? How much work have you put into being Miss Right or should he accept you as you are and fit in around you? If he did slot in to your life would he really be Mr. Right or an accouterment, an asset, a trinket that you would get bored of?

The thing I am asked by eligible men more than anything these days is, "where have all the nice girls gone". Think about those words carefully. These men are not asking where the doormats went, the meek mice, the housewife slaves. Not at all. No what they are asking is where all the women went who don't have a huge checklist as long as their arms. Most men simply want someone to love, someone who they can dote on in their own ways and who they can feel special and share with. The problem for them is that they are not finding it because they are constantly under the pressure of women’s check lists. They are told they must adapt and fit in, they are trying to fulfill their part of the list bargain and then they are faced with the Miss Rights out there.

As a potential Miss Right you owe it to yourself to complete a few tasks. Take a long, hard look at your list and ask yourself exactly how flexible you are being. Secondly look at who your Mr. Right is and how truthfully obtainable they are. Thirdly, don't kid yourself about your own potentials but don't compromise on ideals either. Fourthly, bring yourself out into the open and go after your Mr. Right.

Don't play the waiting game because you do not want to spend the rest of your life knowing your Mr. Perfect is married to someone else when he could have been yours. And finally, compromise is the key in reality, for all the things Mr. Right must be, try and balance that with attempting to be something your Mr. Right doesn't want to miss.

Thoughts On Possessive and Jealous Men

The biggest problem in our dating world are jealous and possessive men. While they are desperate to find a woman they can love and adore, once they have found her possessive men most often do not believe they can keep hold of her due to a lack of self-confidence, self-respect and self-belief. They don't truly believe they deserve the girl so they try and subjugate her to rely on them and increase the woman's sense of dependency. It is all too common these days as more and more men feel uneasy about who they truly are and lack self-esteem.

The first hurdle a woman faces is in not being able to spot a jealous and possessive man in advance. He is charming and good-looking, he has the world at his feet so it appears and you have absolutely no reason to think he isn't prince charming. And maybe he is Mr. nice-guy at this stage. But if you know then what you later discover things would be much easier.

I first spotted possessive-man-syndrome whilst working for a few years in a regular job in an English city. At the end of day I would walk home to my apartment and was always impressed as to how many boyfriends sat patiently in their cars waiting to pick up their girlfriends and wives from work. I dare say in retrospect a few were genuine but it took me some months of seeing the same faces before I cottoned on to the fact that these guys were not there for the best of reasons. The cat was let out of the bag by a woman friend who said that she could never go for a drink after work because her boyfriend didn't like it and always insisted he picked her up from work at 5pm on the dot. If she needed to go anywhere she had to let him know in advance.

This shocking revelation may be will known to many women readers but for a guy I hadn't realized at that time quite how large the problem was. The key issue it appears is a man's low self-esteem. Usually the possessive and jealous guy believes his lady will be stolen away from him. He doesn't trust her or her words of love and ignores the fact that she stays with him. He feels she is plotting to escape at any turn, looking for a way out and doesn't really love him at all. Why? Simply because he feels he doesn't deserve her and deep down believes she could do far better than him.

This causes the possessive man a dilemma. If she would really like to run away then how can I make her stay. Easy, what I will do is make her dependent on me, make her need me and want me and have no need to be anywhere but with me. Even if I go out every night with my male buddies. The man doesn't love himself so he doesn't understand why she loves him either. But he needs to feel she does, so he needs to have demonstrations as to how far she will go for him. He will promote the positive attitude of staying at home together and group social activities will be extinguished. At home you are where he can see you.

As a relationship develops the possessive man will find ways of ensuring you are there for him. He will create fictitious scenarios where he needs your help and assistance which affect your social routine. Rather than meeting friends you will be assisting him. Of course at first this is all part of romantic relationship building. After all you want to spend as much time as possible with the man you love. Bit by bit he will divorce you for your everyday friends and activities, even spending time illustrating how your friends are not really your true friends. He is isolating you for his own needs.

Once he has done that he will also then criticize you and make you feel bad about yourself to ensure that you too have low self esteem. If you don't feel good about yourself then how will anyone else ever want you. He will tell you how lucky you are to have him and he will always love you for who you are. And eventually he will build up that degree of dependence (and fear) so much that you will truly believe that what he says is true. Your own identity becomes a thing of the past and your friends will make many worried comments to you that you will ignore or make excuses for.

At this stage you are now where he wants you, isolated and dominated. He feels better about himself because you depend on him, but he will never trust you, because he will always believe that there is a conspiracy that you will escape. That you don't really love him after all. He needs constant demonstration and proof that you do. Your friends and his will not know any of this though they may suspect. He will still be the great social guy in groups. Bit it can get to the point where you dread going out socially in case you get a hard time when you get home. This my friends, is not what your life is all about. This isn't why we date and have relationships. Yes we all want to feel desired, wanted and loved in our lover's eyes. But not like this.

A little jealousy, ironically can go along way. Women (and men) like being loved and wanted and a secure arm round the waist drawing you in can be great fun. Small amounts of jealousy (very small in a playful way) can be attractive and sexy. But its knowing when things have gone too far that matters. Many women have admitted to me that a man who has not a single jealous bone in his body cannot really love her. A man needs to show he cares by drawing her in occasionally. Both parties feel good from this. But it has to be kept under control.

There are many reasons why men are becoming more possessive in today's society and we all have our own theories. It is possible that with the rise of women in the workplace and in determining their own independence financially and socially, that men feel increasingly threatened. Their traditional role as husband and father, the dominant voice in the household, is increasingly archaic and has little place in current society. Instead they are desperately attempting to reposition themselves in a relationship and find out what their new role really is. But old habits die hard and men still try and cling on to the ways in which they were brought up. It will take time for men to learn that they are not always the primary focus in a relationship and must give as much attention to the needs of their partner, as they give to him. And to be honest I do not expect miracles overnight.

Men who don't feel good about their own domestic roles, their lack of masculinity, their frustrations with their own poor career, their lack of financial success, their dominant parental influences and their general lack of well-being can all assist in the progression of possessive tendencies. To own someone is not to have them. To be loved is an open invitation, not something to be captured and kept imprisoned.

A happy, confident, self-assured man doesn't have issues about possession and jealousy. No although many aspects of a relationship may be shared, he also treasures his girlfriend's independence and her assured separate set of values, as she does in him. Relationships are about sharing but also about retaining freedom of self expression and personal identity. Realtionships are also about innate trust.

There was an interesting article recently in a national newspaper about how dominant career women with great success and financial wealth often still had very dominant partners at home. Let us not confuse manliness and masculinity with possessiveness. Jealousy and possessiveness is about stripping away confidence, esteem and dignity. It is about subjugating and decrying the needs of the injured party for the wishes of the stronger force. That has no place in our modern world.

Jealous and possessive men are sad and pathetic creatures who are all too common today. As a woman you do not need ever to put up with them and neither do they really deserve you. The huge irony involved is that had the guy been relaxed and self-assured he would probably have never lost you in the first place, but his low self-esteem meant that he forced to happen what he most dreaded. You leaving him. If you are reading this and have yet to leave, then you will need your friends and family to assist as you are dealing with a person with serious psychological issues. He will try and keep you and will use any psychological measure he can to make you need him and come back. He will work on the weak spots he has already created in you.

But do try and take heart. Many women have been in the same situation and moved on. Even if it is very hard. As women become increasingly confident in their own lives, so some men fall away into lesser self-esteem. There are lots of really nice guys out there to date and love and the one you have is not the one who will make you happy, whatever he says. It can take a long time to heal some of the trauma you have been put through, but the fact is, it is your life and your world and if you want to do whatever you like to make yourself happy, that is 100% your prerogative to do so. We don't need jealous and possessive men in this world and the sooner they sort themselves out without your help, the better.

In another dating article on this site, you will find a general set of rules than men should follow when dating. In the same way, women have some general rules that they should contend with when entering the dating jungle. Now I know everyone is different, so don't take things too seriously here. There has been some controversy over some literature published in the USA that lays out in detail the rules a woman should follow to get her guy (or gal). Ellen Fein and Sherrie Schneider's 1995 bestseller "The Rules," explains how women should play hard if they want to get their guy. I can understand why some groups would be hostile about this, but the fact is that when we grow up, there are a predefined set of dating rules. What happens is that we forget most of them after the age of 21, and then realize we need to relearn them.

I wish there weren't any general rules, but courtship is a ritual. There are things that we make happen that excite, stimulate, create interest and confound. Dating is a long test of compatibility. Are we perfectly matched? If we just threw ourselves together, then the chances of long term happiness might be compromised. And yet previous generations managed to succeed on a far less complex courtship criteria list. Many arranged marriages work all too interestingly.

In every society there are a predefined set of social rules we follow, from the way and timing of eating to the way we behave in public. The issue here is that when women date, there are some things that can help them be more successful. If we accept that dating is a game, then there are rules to that game. There are winners and losers. If you know the rules in advance, it gives you a head start. If men know the rules by which you are playing, you may change the rules to suit the situation to keep the man guessing. I am tired of hearing women saying "He is bald" as if he was ill or rude. Being bald is like growing older and getting wrinkles. It's natural. If a woman is obsessed with dating men with full heads of hair, then she could be classed as extremely shallow and overly obsessed with youth. Of course her current hairy beau could end up bald later on, so she may want to rethink her position. If a man said that he wouldn't date half the female population because their breasts were too small, he would be labeled a chauvinist fool. Yet I constantly hear women express their interest that "my man must have a full head of thick shiny locks." It is as if a sign of social success is to date the man with the most hair.

Interestingly a man with a purposely shaved head doesn't count. He has the ability to grow hair but he has chosen to have a shaved head due to fashion. Maybe he is a member of the armed forces and it's expected of him. Maybe he is P. Diddy. Either way, many women appear not to want to date men who don't have the potential for a full head of hair. It's part of natural attraction and therefore a major part of dating.

A woman I know once said about her prospective date; "Oh no, he won't do at all. He has no hair. I want a man with a full head of hair like my daddy had!" Another girl friend said to me; "I adore men with shaved heads, bald men are so masculine and sexy. They remind me of Bruce Willis." So my initial impression here is that it's down to personal taste.

Dating is initially based on physical attraction and subconsciously we are seeking a healthy mate to procreate with. A lack of hair is tied in with age and maturity, but for some reason half of women view a lack of hair as unhealthy. I know a great many women who will not date balding men at all. Strangely, the cult of hair seems most prevalent in the US, which is partly due to genes. To make my very unscientific point, I was once drinking in a bar in Anchorage where I was the only man in a packed bar who had no hair! In Europe this would be unthinkable.

The first thing we need to spell out here is that having a bald head has nothing to do with poor health. It is generally a process of age. It is the same as a woman's breasts sagging, or eye getting wrinkles around then. Being bald is a gradual process that appears to affect different men at different ages. I think the reason why women are so affected by the image of a bald head is because of the media and Hollywood. The leading man has always been portrayed in western cinema as a man with a full head of hair. Hair is also the natural domain of youth. Therefore inevitably women grow up expecting their men to have a full head of locks just like a Rolling Stone, David Bowie or Clint Eastwood. Subconsciously they want their children to have full heads of hair too.

There are rare exceptions. Sting has been losing his hair for years but is seen as very sexy. Nicholas Cage appears to be losing his hair but this doesn't affect his attraction. Sean Connery has lit the fires of generations of women and is probably the sexiest bald man alive. So maybe hair has nothing to do with it. Maybe it is the whole package, the overall attractiveness of the person concerned. Success and confidence levels certainly assist any man, whatever his hair length and this should be taken into consideration.

The issue for bald men then is confidence when dating. If you are losing your hair gradually then the best thing one can do is never cover it up. The sweep-over hair styles of yesterday have long since gone and any man with a lack of thick hair should take a long hard look at Bruce Willis and get to the barbers for a shave. A man has to learn to live with not having lots of hair, which doesn't happen in an instant. It is one thing to have one's head shaved on purpose, another to have ones hair thinning by the month.

My own advice is to take the bull by the horns and accept that not all women will love you as a bald man, but then they may not have gelled with you anyway, so who cares? If a woman judges you by your hair she is probably not worth knowing in the first place. And if you are a woman, imagine someone judging you by the size of your thighs. Instead guys, remember that around half the female population will love you for your looks and see a shaved head as very masculine, virile or unimportant in the overall equation.

My advice is to join the shaven-headed generation and give yourself some confidence and panache by dressing well, looking good and getting your nicely buffed head a tan. When summer looms, it's time to take stock guys. You are going to have to go to the beach at some stage, and even worse you are going to have to take your shirt off, unless you want to look like you are concealing something. If you begin in April, 3 months of training will lead you into a confident packed July. Certainly you will feel a great deal better about yourself anyway as I know miracles don't happen over night.

Then I have to mention body hair. Whilst amassing body hair as one gets older may be nature's way of keeping us warm, a huge mountain of hair over your shoulders and back simply will not do. Women generally don't find to attractive so lose it. Where do you lose it? Straight down to the waxing salon my friend. It may hurt, but only once every six weeks and girls have their legs waxed all the time so pull your self together. Gyms often have an area that caters for waxing and if all else fails get your mom or sister (perhaps not your father!) to do it with a home waxing kit. It will take a few minutes and make a huge difference to your desirability factor.

Okay so once your body and hair cover are in good shape also consider a tanning salon for 3 sessions if you are pale. It's a fact of life for the modern woman, committing to someone other than themselves is scary stuff. Commitment means compromise.

I often hear women complaining that there are no eligible men anymore and that they struggle to find anyone who matches up to their most basic requirements as a mate. Think about this, you rarely hear a man saying that there are no eligible women anymore, though they may argue there are too many highly selective women. No, this lack of commitment used to be an accusation thrown at men wary of marriage, but these days you are more likely to find a woman with a good job who has taken over this role as the wary one.

I know lots of eligible men. They are young, unmarried, good looking, single, with good careers, lifestyles, are fit and healthy and looking for a serious relationship. In fact most men I know are serial monogamists! I asked one of my friends, Sean, 32, about whether he felt that the modern women he met were ready to commit and he said:

" I have wanted to settle down for a long time now, but women are too interested in their careers, want a casual lover with a fat wallet and nice car, or are simply too scared of the commitment levels required to live with someone. It seems to me, women just aren't ready to compromise their new found strengths and are very frightened of monogamy. Every time I have attempted to have a serious relationship, it is the girl who has panicked when things become more intense."

Sociologically, this is an interesting development and Sean's view is not alone. The fact is, there is a huge pool of resourceful, talented men out there ready to commit, but they are really struggling to find partners. Its important to note that there is no great difference in the number of single, available men and women and so we don't face an imbalance. So what is going wrong?

Well first of all, we have to consider social change. The social emancipation of women has been refreshingly vital in the last 15 years. Salaries for women have increased in many sectors, more women than men appear to be excelling academically and have moved into the mainstay career domain. A career has meant financial liberation allowing women to purchase their own apartments and cars and whole self-sufficient lifestyle unheard of two generations previously. Women are able to conceive later and they have a sexual liberty unparalleled in modern society. Indeed some men I interviewed saw women now as the main sexual aggressor and were "frightened of them." Women have become dominant in some areas and men are on the retreat, uncertain of their new role and what it may entail. Whilst I appreciate this may not be true in some of the smaller communities, the trend for city dwelling women confirms this general trend.

Marriage has become a taboo subject for many women, seeing it as a role for the subjugated with one-sided compromises that are just not worth taking on board. The average of marriage for a western woman has now increased from the early twenties to almost the early thirties, certainly 29 being a key age for many. Women instead have replaced early marriage with self fulfillment, meaningful life-content and career-path progression. This in turn means that a woman becomes instinctively very choosey about any life-partner who may interrupt this comfortable world.

In the meantime, men are struggling and perhaps seen as increasingly pathetic in their needy overtures. This is all too obvious in TV ad campaigns currently running. Whilst a man fights desperately to keep his loved-one, the woman has other ideas about where she sees herself ten years from now. It may well be settled with children, it may well be as a tax exile in the Bahamas, it may well be independent, financially astute and driven as well as successful. But she isn't going to take any old man along for the ride. She wants her man to shape up or ship out. And rightly so.

It is clear that relationships boundaries have moved. Many career women will not compromise their jobs for the sake of a relationship. It is as likely a man will move for his girlfriend , than she for him. With career comes financial independence and like it or not, many women struggle to understand that men were brought up to feel like the breadwinner. This is likely to relate back to the hunter-gatherer of human evolution so cannot be excused so dismissively. However, as many women excel in their given careers, so the man has to come to terms with the fact that he may not be the primary breadwinner any more. Indeed he may be more likely to stay at home and rear the children.

The red-blooded male is in a quandary. The media and Hollywood send him many different confusing signals as to how he should act and react. The problem here is that as yet no final solution has resolved. Women's lives have become dynamic and men are slow to react and evolve alongside. Consequently we can explain the reactionary rise of the Laddish culture alledgedly portrayed in magazines such as Loaded, FHM and via Jackass TV. Where a man cannot find his own sense of identity within a relationship, so he has divorced himself from considering relationship evolution. Be careful however, this is not to take on board the difficult situation modern men find themselves in with women.

As women evolve their own independence during their twenties, so they become sophisticated consumers and have acute sense of taste. Far more so than many men. This in turn means that they know exactly what they are looking for when you come along to ask them on a date. Get it right and you may be selected, get it wrong and you will be dumped without hesitation. And no, you may not be for keeps. The sophisticated new woman will often therefore see any committed relationship as similar to giving something up. You will often hear women say that they are seeking a man who will "compliment" their lives and add to their life experiences. There is no suggestion of compromise on their behalf however.

Women are also acutely aware that men cost women and can drain their emotional and financial wealth. A man can be hard work if he is not himself already emotionally self-sufficient. I am sorry to say it guys, but a lot of you are a little too emotionally needy as yet. This may relate to the current state of male self confidence in a world of increasingly dominant women. Women now value their freedom to express themselves sexually as never before and this certainly causes men a problem. TV shows like Sex and the City have covered almost every bastion of sexual discussion that men often feel uncomfortable with. Whilst women move forward increasingly confident in their own sexual behavior ands needs, men are struggling to take on the open mindedness required. Ask many men about the subject of oral or anal sex for example and they will run a mile. Men always thought sex was their domain, now the hunter has become the hunted.

Children is a key ingredient in the equation because however successful and confident the modern woman is, her biological clock may still tick. First of all its important to stress that some women are now happy to admit they never wish to have children, which is a change from previous generations. Some women are happy to admit they never wish to marry. But for those seeking children in their thirties, they have more options than merely seeking a stable semi-permanent relationship. Whereas men may have run from such a responsibility previously, now they are fighting to maintain it. If they can be replaced by a fertility clinic, they may be in trouble.

I don't have the answers to this issue, but I do see that women are increasingly dominant in relationships, whilst the men have simply lost their way. Whilst a woman may want her man to act like a man, it is a man with conditions. Whereas before a man could call the shots, now he must listen carefully if its not he who ends up being left on the shelf. It may not be that women can't commit, it may simply be that they don't have to anymore.

When dating successfully, getting your timing right is one of the single most important factors. Timing in respect to the best time to ask a girl out, with respect to what night to ask her out first and even with respect to when in your lives you actually meet at all.

Looking back on my life so far I realize that when relationships didn't work out, it wasn't because the girls I dated were wrong for me. Most often it was because we simply met at the wrong time in our lives. To meet a great girl who wants to get married to you when you are 22 years old may just be wrong timing. Meeting a fantastic lady when you are working abroad or on a short contract in a different location may be bad timing. And meeting someone who wants children when you are not yet ready is again bad timing. Sadly, many of these situations can't be helped, because that's how life goes. The people we would have grown old with best are often the ones we encountered to early or at the wrong moment in time. One cannot go back and one cannot rekindle something lost in time, so we have to accept that bad timing does happen with all of us.

Some timing issues have more to do with events and life cicumstances. Like when we ask a girl out at just the wrong moment. We are attracted to someone and take the initiative or opportunity, only to discover that she got into a new relationship hree weeks earlier. Or that she has just broken up with someone and is not yet ready for a new relationship. Maybe there has been a family crisis and the girl you are interested in is not predisposed for a romantic encounter. Three times in my life I have met great girls just as they (or I) were relocating to a new city! On top of this if you add illness and many other factors, there are plenty of opportunities for getting your timing wrong and invariably this is not your fault. Just a fact of life.

If someone accepts your proposal of a date, then you can control the timing somewhat better. Your basic instinct is to go for a weekend because you won't need to go to work the following day and so can stay out later. Often there are more social events to go to at a weekend and more restaurants open and with better atmosphere. If we are to believe the movies, the ruthless tough guy always gets the girl. And didn't it seem that the bad boys at school always had the hottest babes? We see fools and meatheads with the girls of our fantasies. In the mall we see our flaxen haired goddesses with America's Most Wanted. Is it nature at work, is it us, what has gone awry?

Men are confused. We like to refer to stereotypes and work from them. Men are told that we need to be a hero and a tough guy. But then we are told we need to be in touch with our sensitive sides. Meanwhile the man down the street who treats his girlfriends like crap, never calls, is rude and disrespect appears to have a fan club developing. Life, my friends, can seem unfair. But let's look at what is going on with this scenario.

They go where they want. They answer to no one. They are, in other words, fascinating. Tow the line, do as you are told and inevitably you will be become dull. Bad guys don't have to be in shape, just look at James Galdofini from The Sopranos, who is immensely attractive despite his rotund appearance. Plus bad guys are a challenge. We all love a challenge, and women may love a challenge even more than the boys. If something is a challenge, the end results must surely be worthwhile, right? I am not in any way suggesting that we should all be Mr. Bad Guy. Not at all. What I am saying is that there are lessons to be learned here. According to a new study by UCI researchers, a lot of online daters single out specific races to date -- and these choices often reflect negative cultural stereotypes about black women and Asian men. The data, which was collected from Yahoo! Personals users in 2004-05, shows that white men tend to look for Asian and Latino dating partners over African-Americans, while white women often exclude Asian males.

Attraction and chemistry play a huge role in whether or not two people are compatible, and it's definitely possible that someone just isn't attracted to a specific characteristic shared by a large population of a certain race. But, at what point does who you're willing to date say something bad about you?

There are tons of things to remember now that you've decided you're officially on the prowl: Make sure to get your money's worth out of that gym membership, bring out your old button-up shirts because plaid is back in style, go out and have fun with your buddies regularly and drink plenty of water. The list goes on and on.

There's one thing, however, that seems obvious and yet is one of the easiest to neglect: Lay back and relax. That's right -- this is the single piece of advice that gets ignored the most. And we're not talking about literally laying back. This is a time for action, a time for preening and having fun. The relaxing we're referring to is the calm mental attitude needed to successfully find the right match.

How many times have you found yourself freaking out about what the object of your affection is really thinking? How many hours have you spent trying to decipher their actions, reading into every single one? How many times have you replayed a certain moment or conversation in your head, studying it like a scientist studies a lab rat? Quit! Quit that right now.

It may seem easier said than done at first, but it's so important to trust yourself and stop stressing out. Here are some things to remember:

1. You don't know -- and will never know -- what he or she is thinking.

So quit worrying about it. Unless your name starts with "Madame" and you come equipped with a crystal ball, you have no idea what is going through a person's mind unless they tell you. More importantly, because you're no psychic, you're probably wrong. How could you possibly be spot-on about a person's inner-most thoughts? Rely on actual communication and, of course, body language and nuances. But don't overdo it. The more you stress out, the more your confidence will suffer -- and, in the end, confidence is the most important thing.

2. You don't know -- and will never know -- what he or she is up to.

You called and left a message on their cell phone two days ago and still no reply. This sends your brain into a frenzy. Are they not interested anymore? Are they avoiding you? Did they find someone else? If you're sitting there trying to come up with all the things they could possibly be doing instead of calling you, why don't you try this: Come up with 10 possible reasons they haven't called. Now come up with 10 more. And then another10. By now, you're probably starting to see how useless this is. Truth is, there are an infinite number of possibilities, and speculating will get you nowhere fast. Sit back, relax and let them get back to you. Pay attention to the behavioral patterns that person establishes -- the bigger picture -- and don't sweat the small stuff.

3. Patience looks good on you.

No one wants to date a worry wart. Or at least not at first -- there'll be time for that later on in the relationship. What you need to do is be calm and collected and let the other person bask in your patient demeanor. Observation is key in the initial stage of a relationship, and if you give it just enough time, you'll get all the answers you need to help you decide if you've found the right one or if it's time to move on.

Life can be pretty hectic, so try not to let dating add to the strain. Focus on the fun and excitement that dating entails. And remember that you only have control over yourself and your own actions, so don't give yourself a headache by worrying so much about what's going on on the other side. You can't really do anything about it anyhow, right? So relax! Be confident and enjoy yourself!

The Wingman -- A Brief History

Wingman -- wing·man (wĭng'mən): Your trusted sidekick at the bar

Many people think the history of the wingman dates back to the 1986 film Top Gun; to the '96 flick Swingers, in which the role was glorified; or even to the Coors Light commercial featuring the song "Ode to the Wingman." In reality, the wingman's history can be traced back to prehistoric times. However, the role has evolved significantly for the better.

In the caveman's day, the wingman was not only employed for courtship rituals but was also a trusted hunting partner and confidant. It wasn't uncommon for an alpha male to have several wingmen, each serving a different role, from hunting to dating and beyond. The relationship between pilot and wingman was more precarious in those days, however, as the pilot would frequently bludgeon the wingman as a show of his manhood to impress a cavewoman. (This was also a popular tactic for a would-be pilot.) It sure is a good thing we live in a more civilized time.

What, then, is the role of the wingman today? His most common use is as a resource for the pilot at a bar or club. The wingman may act as a scout (selecting a target), beverage liaison (retrieving the next round so the pilot and target are not interrupted), bragger (talking up the pilot's exploits), social butterfly (mingling with and charming the target's friends) or memory aid (remembering important details, such as the target's name, her interests and where the pilot stashed her number). He may also police the pilot to ensure that the alpha male doesn’t pursue a relationship he will end up regretting in the morning.

Wingmen come in many forms:

The copilot -- who is his pilot's equal, but becomes copilot if his friend is the first to make contact with a target.
The first mate -- who is an equal but has been designated "wingman" that evening for myriad possible reasons. I often fill this roll. Since I'm in a long term relationship, I can offer objective advice, and because I'm not looking for a date, I am free to approach a tough target or make a fool of myself without risking alienation from the ladies.
The tail gunner -- who is typically inferior in appearance and/or game. This is a symbiotic role: He is there to support the pilot but is also in a prime position to benefit, should the target be flanked by an attractive friend, whom he might otherwise be unable to effectively pursue. This is sometimes referred to as the "halo effect," as the pilot's coolness is projected onto the wingman. (Remember how much cooler that dork Goose seemed, just by hanging out with Maverick?)

For an active member of the dating community, it is important to have more than one wingman, in case one is not available -- or, ideally, you have wingmen that possess different skills that work well in different environments. It is also important to have a close relationship with your wingman, and he with you, so I suggest somewhere between 2 and 4 trusted comrades. It is vital that a wingman knows pertinent information, such as your likes (blonde or redhead), danger points (are you a lush when it comes to tequila?) and signals (when you tap your nose, it's time to move on, and he will get up immediately or dive into a magic trick that occupies the group for another vital 30 minutes).

Develop a core group of wingmen you know and trust -- they are your brothers in arms. And always reciprocate the courtesy. You might even learn a thing or two.
